Design Studies

The College of Design is pleased to offer a new undergraduate program beginning in Fall 2008. The Bachelor of Arts in Design Studies is a liberal arts degree program that provides a broad, introductory view of history and theory of design, followed by more focused investigation and a capstone project in architecture, graphic design, industrial design, landscape architecture, crafts, textiles or material culture.

While the studio-based degree programs in the college serve students who are committed to professional practice in a particular design discipline, the Design Studies program addresses students with interdisciplinary interests in history and theory. The Design Studies program prepares students for a later graduate study in a professional degree program or in art/design history, museum studies or historic preservation.

Students should not view Design Studies as a transitional program from which to transfer into one of the college's professional programs. Design Studies students who wish to change their majors to the professional degree program in the college will be part of the general pool of applicants competing for seats in the freshman class and will be subject to the same admissions requirements for non-majors.
