Susan Brandeis holds a Master of Science degree in art education from Indiana University, with a studio concentration in textiles and a Master of Fine Arts in textile design from the University of Kansas.
Brandeis has taught at the College since 1982. She coordinates the program in Fibers and Surface Design, and the Anni Albers Scholars Program. She has also taught frequently in the Design Fundamentals program. She offers instruction in weaving and weave design, dyeing, screen printing, off-loom fiber structures, pattern, applied color, textile designing for industry, and textile history. She is a member of the University's Academy of Outstanding Teachers.
Her own studio work in art textiles has been published in the books Celebrating the Stitch, The Surface Designer's Art, and The Art Quilt, and in leading craft and textile magazines such as American Craft, Surface Design Journal, and Fiberarts. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and in England, Ireland, Finland, Japan, the Netherlands, Colombia, at the International Biennial of Tapestry in Lausanne, Switzerland, and at the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C. Her work is in numerous private and public collections including the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum. She has taught summer workshops at Penland School (North Carolina), Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (Tennessee), Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (Maine), Oregon College of Fine Arts, and Split Rock Arts Program (University of Minnesota). She is the recipient of three visual artist fellowships from the North Carolina Department of Cutural Resources.
