Haig Khachatoorian

Haig has practiced, internationally, in the disciplines of industrial, exhibit, graphic and interior design as consultant, educator and freelance designer. He joined the NCSU College of Design faculty in 1987, and has served as Department Chair of Industrial Design (8 yrs) and Director of Graduate Programs (6 yrs), and Interim Associate Dean for Research (1 yr). Previous to these positions, he was an Associate Professor at both The Ohio State University / College of the Arts and Ball State University / College of Architecture & Planning. Also, he has been a Visiting Professor at the Bezalel Academy of Art & Design, Jerusalem, as well as KIDP, Seoul and other international institutions. Haig has also been a VP / Design Director for several well known design firms and has consulted for a wide range of clients, including : Royal Trust Canada, Bank of America, Ford, GTE, Barclays Bank, Canadair, Midway Airlines, Citibank, DaimlerChrysler / ADtranz Division, Federal Express, Porsche Cars NA, Ross Labs, Storehouse, Amoco, United States Information Agency, The Israel Museum, GlaxoWellcome, Philips Consumer Electronics, IBM, John Deere, Caterpillar and Bugatti Italy. Being professionally active, he has held numerous offices in IDSA, CSCA, AIGA and others, including Chair of IDSA Carolinas Chapter and Vice President of AIGA Raleigh. For his work, he has received awards from IDSA, IBD, ISP, NRMA. Haig studied at the : Pratt Institute, Academy of Fine Arts / Krakow, University of Surrey (Environmental Psychology), and Harvard University / Graduate School of Design. Among other honors, he was a Loeb Fellow, DAAD Scholar, IBM Fellow and Fulbright Scholar (twice) and was inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, in which he served as NCSU Chapter President. Haig has lived and worked in the following US cities and foreign countries: Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Fairbanks, Anchorage, San Francisco, Muncie, Columbus and Poland, Israel, England and traveled extensively in Ireland, France, Germany, South Africa, Argentina, Moldova, Korea, China, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Armenia, Italy, and The Czech Republic. He is presently Professor of Industrial Design, PhD in Design Faculty, and Affiliated Faculty / Entrepreneurship Initiative at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. In July 2009, he again assumed the position of Director of ID Graduate Programs, Department of Graphic Design & Industrial Design at NCSU. He received the Outstanding Teacher Award 2009 from the NCSU College of Design and became a member of the University's Academy of Outstanding Teachers. He is an active member of the Industrial Designers Society of America ( IDSA ), Human Factors & Ergonomics Society ( HFES ), Fulbright Association, Phi Kappa Phi / NCSU Chapter 33. He is noted in the 2009 Marquis' Edition Who's Who in America.
